If we speak of the origins of Isla Cristina we must go to the 18th century, in historic terms it´s considered a recent era, but not for this is it less important. The origin of Isla Cristina is that of the fisherman, and the catalonians that came here to work as fisherman, fishing for tuna and sardines.

The extraction of salt from the fish was the origin of the actual fishing exploitation, which in todays actuality is stil a big source of their income in Isla Cristina. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 also left it´s mark in this locality since it modified it´s surroundings. What today is called Isla Cristina was called the Royal Island of Higuereta, it´s original name.

In 1834 the Royal Island of Higuereta quit being called by this name and began calling itself Isla Cristina in honor of the help given by the Queen Maria Cristina during the cholera epidemic.

Other important dates along the margin of the foundation of Isla Cristina were for example the Huelva Earthquake of 1969, or the construction of important monuments, for example the Church of Our Lady Dolores.
