The founding of Isla Cristina was done by catalonian fisherman. The first one of them to reach this location was from Canet de Mar and his name was Arnau. In 1756 others followed him like Josep Faneca, who discovered potable water, as well as Anton Salerich, Antoni Rosello...

The Figuereta or Higuerita was the first name assigned to this location. It was built around the potable water well that Josep Faneca had discovered. In 1802 it went on to become the capital of this area, which had un until then belonged to La Redondela. In January 1834 it was finally names Isla Cristina in honor of the Queen Maria Cristina.
